Motivational Coach Charged with Reckless Manslaughter
Motivational coach James Arthur Ray is currently facing three counts of reckless manslaughter after a spiritual retreated resulted in the deaths of three participants.
James Arthur Ray, 53, is a motivational coach that led participants in his retreat (called spiritual warriors) to Sedona, Arizona where they would partake in events that would supposedly help them push personal and psychological boundaries that they believed were hampering their full potential.
The participants shaved their heads, participated in grueling physical activities, meditated without food or water for 36 hours, and then participated in a sweat lodge in which they would symbolically die and be reborn. For many of the participants however the experience was excruciating and life-threatening, actually resulting in the death of three participants in the sweat lodge.
The sweat lodge was composed of sticks and tarps draped over a small pit where water poured over fire-heated stones generated steam in the small area. The intense heat apparently caused participants to sweat, vomit, pass out, foam at the mouth and hallucinate.
Ray faces criminal charges for recklessly endangering the lives of participants resulting in three deaths.
