Residents and Students Allowed Back After Natural Gas Leak
Yesterday morning, Betsey Rhodes Elementary School was placed on lockdown and residents of nearby homes were evacuated because a construction project accidentally broke a natural gas pipeline nearby. The area where the line was broken was located on North Buffalo Drive near Farm Road.
Fire fighters had blockade the area and stop traffic from coming in, as well as go door to door evacuating residents once they were aware of the danger. The gas leak was contained within 45 minutes of the rupture, and it took another hour to replace the pipe. No one was injured in the incident.
Problems in natural gas pipes can cause catastrophic explosions like the one in San Bruno a few weeks ago. In that explosion, at least 8 people were killed and more than 50 others were injured. Hundreds were evacuated and dozens of homes were destroyed.
