Baby Formula Recalled for Possible Bug Contamination
Abbot Laboratories, which makes the most popular form of baby formula, has been inundated with phone calls after recalling millions of cans of powdered baby formula. A manufacturing plant of the Similac infant formula found small beetles in the plant and, after checking production, realized that .02% of the products were contaminated. Symptoms of ingestion of the contaminated products include a mild upset stomach. The mild nature of the illness makes it less likely that they will be sued for defective product.
Production was immediately halted and all products which could have been contaminated were recalled. Officials at Abbot Laboratories say that it is highly unlikely that any of the recalled products were actually contaminated, but that they were taking precautions.
The 5 million can recall is expected to cost the company around $100 million. This is the third major recall recently; contaminated eggs and baby Tylenol have also been recalled due to contamination.
