One Fatality in Apartment Building Fire
A Sunday fire at Sherman Garden Apartments has resulted in the death of a 20 year old woman. The apartment complex, which is owned by the City of Las Vegas Housing Authority, suffered about $50,000 of damage from the top-floor blaze.
Firefighters responded to the call within 5 minutes of receiving it, and already the top floor was engulfed in smoke. The apartment building was evacuated, but one woman was found in her apartment. Although she was pulled from the building by firefighters, she did not have a pulse and was not breathing when she was found. She was pronounced dead at University Medical Center after having CPR performed on her.
Of the 12 apartments in the building, most were unaffected. Only one room of one apartment was completely destroyed; the rest of the apartment had smoke damage. It has not been released whether anyone is taking action against the building, which had smoke alarms but did not have a sprinkler system.
