Another Newborn Dies in Ongoing Medical Malpractice Case

At the Sunrise Children's Hospital, two nurses were suspended after an unusual number of catheter disruptions in the neonatal intensive care unit were discovered. The hospital had suspected negligence or intentional malpractice, and began videotaping the ward, which is where premature and sickly newborns are meant to recover and grow.
Officials at the hospital found a total of 14 catheter disruptions in about half a year, at which point the nurses' who appeared responsible were suspended. The nurses have now been identified as Jessica May Rice and Sharon Ochoa-Reyes.
One of the disrupted catheter lines had already resulted in a newborn requiring an emergency surgery, which is no easy feat when those in the neonatal intensive care unit are already so fragile. Another left a newborn in critical condition.
Sadly, hospital officials have reported that the newborn child who was in critical condition has died. Details of the exact time of death and when the catheter disruption occurred have not been made public.
The newborn who needed surgery is doing well. It is not known whether any of the affected families will file a medical malpractice or wrongful death suit against the hospital, although the nurses are the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.
