Toyota Fined $32.4 Million for Delayed Recalls
Toyota, one of the largest automakers in the world, is being fined $32.4 million after it failed to recall two types of defective vehicles in a timely manner. The first, the cars which had poorly designed floor mats which could become stuck underneath the pedals and cause unintended acceleration, caused a few car accidents and even some wrongful deaths. The other, the cars which had defective steering relay rods which were prone to breaking or cracking, were recalled in Japan more than a year before Toyota agreed to recall them in the United States. The fine is the maximum amount allowed under the law, though it is in addition to the $16.4 million that they had to pay earlier in the year for other issues with the recalls.
The fines are a paltry sum compared to what the company could lose if the civil suits against it are successful. The class action personal injury claims have the potential to cost the company billions of dollars. In the past year, more than 11 million Toyota vehicles have been recalled.
