Federal Law Bans Drop-Side Cribs
Drop-side cribs have been popular since the 1940s when they first allowed parents to easily remove their child from the crib without having to lift the baby over the side. In the past ten years, however, drop side cribs have been responsible for more than 30 deaths. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has now unanimously voted to ban them. Neither the manufacture, the sale nor the resale of drop-side cribs will be allowed. Daycare centers and hotels that use the drop-side cribs will have a year to replace them.
The cribs have been under close scrutiny after causing dozens of child deaths. They may have caused at least another 14 more. Major companies such as Evenflo and Pottery Barn have contributed to the string of recalls in recent years. More than 9 million of this type of crib have been recalled due to defects and potential hazards.
Parents who still use a drop-side crib are encouraged to check and make sure that the hardware is not loose and that the crib is secure even under pressure.
