A desert race in Lucerne Valley, California, ended in catastrophy when a 2000 Ford Ranger went airborne and then rolled into a crowd of spectators. The driver, 28 year old Brett M. Sloppy, is a San Marcos native and was not injured in the wreck. According to witnesses, he was driver at 45-50 mph and hit a rock too hard. Some blame the devastation on the closeness of the crowd. Sloppy has not been charged with anything, and police do not believe that alcohol or drugs played a factor.
Witnesses describe the scene as gruesome and bloody.
Eight people were killed and at least seven others were injured. At least seven of the victims were in their 20s. One was a Las Vegas local. Seven of the victims have been identified: Danica Frantzich, 20, of Las Vegas; Andrew Therrin, 22, of Riverside; Anthony Sanchez, 23, of Escondido; Zachary Freeman, 24, of Fillmore; Brian Wolfin, 27, of Escondido; Aaron Farkas, 25, of Escondido; and Dustin C. Malson, 24, of Ventura.
