After more than 32 hours of clearing debris and making the mine shaft safe, authorities say that they have found human remains that they believe belong to the two missing mine workers.
Less than two days prior, a pipe in the mine broke, fell, and hit the cage that was lowering the two workers into the mine. It also caused heavy debris to fall into the cage and the shaft. Although officials cannot concretely say that the remains belong to the two missing workers, they say that the remains were found in the same place as the accident, so there is little doubt about their identification. It will take 3 to 8 weeks to definitely identify the remains.
The Meikle mine has been open since 1994 and has suffered 5 other fatal injuries to its workers. It is a gold mine, but since the accident which left two men missing, has shut down all work which occurs underground.
It is unknown whether the mine was in violation of any safety standards. Rescue crews have only gone through about 10% of the debris at the bottom of the shaft.
