For the fourth time this year, someone has drowned at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The coroner's office has not yet released the name of the 36 year old man because family members have not been contacted.
The man was swimming near to the shore, only a few feet away in fact, when he drowned. Police have not conclusively determined if alcohol was a factor in the drowning, but they suspect that it was. The Mexican national who was living in Las Vegas was not wearing a life jacket either.
The National Park Service was notified of the accident at around 3:00 p.m. People who were nearby got his body out of the water, he was about 6 feet under when he was found, and began performing CPR. The National Park Service Rangers arrived shortly thereafter and spent another half hour attempting CPR. At 3:49 p.m., he was declared dead.
Last year, 14 people died in water-related accidents in the Lake Mead Area.
