Mother Blames Excessive Force for Son's Death
The mother of a 13-year-old boy who was killed after an encounter with two police officers is suing on the grounds of excessive force. The woman claims that the officers were recklessly negligent when they shot her son 14 times. The officers involved in the case are maintaining that they acted according to the law. The officer who shot and killed the 13-year-old has stated that he believed his life and the life of his fellow officer were in danger when he chose to fire upon the boy.
The incident began when the 13-year-old drove away from a gas station without paying for eight dollars worth of gas. The officers pursued the boy who was driving a stolen vehicle at the time. The boy apparently fired shots from a shotgun at the officers before the police officers returned fire at the boy. They did not know at the time that the person that they were chasing was so young.
The mother of the killed boy filed suit in 2009 on the grounds that the police officers used excessive force when apprehending her son.
