Data Shows Helmets Save Lives
A report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that helmets really do save lives.
By studying accident data from all motorcycle accidents in 2006, the report showed that wearing a helmet considerably increased the chances of surviving an accident. In fact, if all the motorcycle riders that had been involved in accidents had been wearing helmets, 752 people would have survived. During that year alone, 4,100 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents, which is tragic.
Surprisingly, not all states require riders to wear helmets. There are just twenty states, as well as the District of Columbia, that have laws requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets at all times. In other states, there is a specific age at which riders must wear helmets, from 17 to 20 years old. Overall, the data shows that wearing a helmet is just the smart thing to do for riders across the country regardless of age.
